So I hope you all are surviving spending time at home. I am starting to get stir-crazy (and I’m still going into work). I can’t imagine how I would be if I wasn’t able to go to work. One way my husband and I have been passing the time is by watching Netflix.
This afternoon we watched one of our favorite documentaries on Netflix, Sour Grapes. Now the first time we watched this, Ryan was a little nervous because he thought it was going to be a boring movie about wine. But this movie is so much more than a boring documentary about wine. Today while we watched this movie, I worked on a little coronavirus amigurumi using this pattern from Once Upon a Yarn. I was using Caron Simply Soft Neon Limelight yarn for the body and Red Heart Scrubby Yarn in Jelly for the spikes.
First, this is the perfect movie to watch while you are stuck at home due to the COVID-19. There are several images of beautiful French vineyards. If you are wishing you were on vacation wine tasting, you can always pause the documentary on one of these beautiful scenes and drink a glass of wine.
This documentary is about Rudy Kurniawan. Ruby was a young wine collector from Indonesia that managed to pull off one of the largest counterfeit wine schemes in wine collecting in the early 2000s. He sold over $35 million of counterfeit Burgundy bottles. Ruby even made Burgundy become one of the most popular wine types in the country.
He managed to trick so many people into buying this wine at auction. He mixed multiple different wines to make a wine that tastes similar to the rare wine. Investigators studied the corks, bottles, labels, wax, and even the glue used on the labels to determine that these wines were forgeries. I think the real hero of the movie is Maureen Downey. She was one of the first to figure out something was off. She analyzed the bottles and noticed that the labels didn’t look 100% right and the cork didn’t look like it was aged enough.
I also found the private investigator to be very animated. He reminded me a lot of the FBI agent in the HBO docuseries called McMillions. They both have this quirky way to make the subject matter seem entertaining. I think this story wouldn’t have been as interesting if the private investigator told the story in a boring manner.
Ruby was found guilty of forging the wine and is currently serving a 10-year sentence in federal prison. He will be getting out of prison sometime in 2020 or 2021. If you would like to learn more about this true crime story, Good Food Revolution wrote a great article on the story.
