Football is one of my favorite sports. Growing up in Missouri, that meant that there was only one team to root for, the Kansas City Chiefs! Keep in mind, this wasn’t always easy. I remember many rough seasons, but recently the tides have turned.

The team today is so much fun to watch. They have an explosive offense with so many great players! I mean Travis Kelce just had his fourth 1000 yard season and is smashing so many records set by another great tight end, Tony Gonzalez (Hall of Fame class of 2019). There is also Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, and Mecole Hardman. Just when you think you have the offense figured out, the pull out another weapon! The most amazing part of this offense has to be the quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Patrick Mahomes is extremely talented. He can make no-look passes for touchdowns. He is the youngest quarterback to pass so many milestones like total number of touchdowns. Not only is he talented, but he also has a way to motivate his teammates to do better. You could see this during the playoff game against the Houston Texans where they overcame a 0-24 deficit to win 51-31. Because of all this, you can see why Pat Mahomes hats are a big deal!

Kansas City Wins
When the Chiefs won the AFC, my sister sent me this in celebration!

This hat pattern can be used to make a 21″ hat (teen or small adult hat) or a 23″ hat (adult large). Just be sure to follow the instructions for the hat size you would like to make.

Kansas City Quarterback Hat

For this hat, you will need the following materials:

Curls (I make anywhere from 35-45 curls):

Using brown yarn, leave a tail of approximately 10 inches. Chain 20. Beginning on the 2nd chain, work 3 sc in each chain.  Fasten off after the last stitch with a ~10 inch tail. You will attach each curl on to the hat using the two tails.  Thread one tail through the space on the side of a dc stitch and then thread the other tail through the space on the other side of the dc stitch.  I like to tie the two tails together prior to sewing in the ends. Do not be alarmed, you will use most of the skein of brown yarn for the curls!

This is a picture showing how you will thread to two tails around the dc stitch. I tie the two tails together after attaching the curl to the hat.

Optional finishing options

I attach a Kansas City Chief arrowhead patch that I bought online from Amazon to the front of the hat. This is completely optional.

I hope you enjoy making your very own Kansas City Quarterback Hat!

  1. I don’t understand the stitching on the curl… how does using the yarn tail at the “end of the curl” to tie it down not immobilize the curl? Would it tie it down to the hat?

  2. I am so beyond excited to start on this project! My sister-in-law is having a baby in June and both parents are big Chiefs fans ( Mahomies for life! ) so I want to make each of them a hat and I’m going to try my hand at adapting this pattern for a baby size for the most adorable family portraits ever! Thank you so much for sharing this pattern.

  3. Thank you for creating a free pattern for us to use that is easy to understand. I have been wanting to make one of these for a while.
