This past week has been crazy here in Ohio. On Thursday, all schools were canceled for at least three weeks due to COVID-19. As a result, you may be looking for things to help entertain your kids while you attempt to work from home. This is a perfect time to introduce your kids to crocheting.
You may be worried that all your kids will want to do during this time of social distancing is to watch tv and play video games. But crafts could be a great way to break up the day. Crocheting is a great option because it provides so many other benefits. It can help kids improve their motor skills and also help improve their math and reading skills. This article from Yarnspirations gives some helpful tips to teach your kids how to crochet. Here are 8 projects that are great for kids.
Crochet Laptop Sleeve
This project is perfect for pre-teens. They can show their own personality by selecting their favorite colors to make their very own laptop sleeve. This can come in handy once school is back in session because they can carry their Chromebook to school in it. You can find the free pattern here. CraftEaze also has some kits for this project that are ready to ship. You can purchase a kit here.
ALEX Toys Craft Cool Crocheting Kit
ALEX Cool Crocheting kit is another great kit to help teach your pre-teen daughter how to crochet. This kit can be found on Amazon and includes everything you would need to make three different projects. These three projects are a hat, a phone cover, and an eye mask.
Coffee Cup Coozie
This coffee cup coozie pattern is perfect for beginners, especially kids. It is worked in a round and only uses 1 stitch (hdc). This pattern is a short pattern, so your kids can see results really fast. They will love making coozies for their parents, teachers, and friends.
Easy Hogwarts Scarf
If your kid is really into Harry Potter, this crochet pattern is perfect for them. It has a very repetitive pattern that can allow your kid to show their support of their preferred Hogwarts house. If you don’t have the yarn readily available you can order it from Yarnspirations where it will be delivered to your door. Also, Joann Fabrics and Micheals both have an option where you purchase items online and then pick up at the store. Both of these options make it possible to get yarn while performing social distancing.
Scrunchies
If you didn’t know, scrunchies are all the rage again (wow that sentence makes me sound old!). This site has three different scrunchie patterns that are all fairly easy. The best thing is, you probably already have all of the supplies for this project already in your house. Your child can make scrunchies for themselves and their friends!
Bookmarks
Bookmarks are also another great way for kids to practice crocheting. They also play another role in possibly getting your child excited to read! This pattern from Left in Knots is great because it is for a Harry Potter-inspired scarf. There are other bookmark patterns that you can find on Pinterest that can teach other stitches once your child masters this pattern.
The next two projects are for kids who are more experienced in crochet. But they are super cute and your kids would love them!
Star Wars Characters
If your child has a basic understanding of crocheting and you are looking for a fun project, then this Star Wars Character kit is perfect. Keep in mind these projects are not for people just learning. This book even includes the yarn needed to make two of the characters. Your kids will have fun making their favorite Star Wars Character. Disney+ is releasing the most recent Star Wars movie early, so this is perfect!
Frozen Characters
This Frozen Character Kit is perfect if you have a child that loves Frozen and is a more intermediate level crocheter. Yarn is included to make Anna and Elsa. Your children will have so much fun “Building a Snowman”. And since Disney+ is releasing Frozen 2 early, this is the perfect project to make!
Thank you so much for these ideas! I was looking for ways to introduce crocheting to kids so this pont found me at exactly the right time.
