Dry Tortugas National Park is truly one of a kind. My husband and I visited in November 2021, and it was an unforgettable trip—even more so because it was nearly 80 degrees there while we had snow flurries back home.
Getting to Dry Tortugas is part of the adventure—you have to take a ferry out to the island. While we were there, we explored Fort Jefferson, a historic fort that was once used as a prison. One of its most famous prisoners was Samuel Mudd, who was imprisoned for his involvement in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. During his time there, a cholera outbreak spread through the fort. As a doctor, he helped care for the sick, which ultimately contributed to his release.
We also went snorkeling—and it was my first time! Seeing fish swim all around us felt like stepping into another world.
