My Thoughts On Diamond Painting

Like many people, I have been searching for new things to try during the pandemic. I have completed so many puzzles and crocheted many blankets, that I wanted to try a different type of craft. I kept seeing ads on Facebook (which I also have spent way too much time on since the pandemic started) and decided I might as well try one of these diamond painting kits.

Diamond Painting is a pretty interesting project. It is like a paint-by-number, but it uses a similar format as cross-stitch. It also uses small jewels instead of thread or paint. The jewels stick to the printed fabric due to the adhesive on the fabric. The end result is pretty cool. The light will shine on the jewels which will make it sparkle. I put my completed painting inside a frame so I can display it. I also read that you could put it on a canvas to display.

My first kit was a Harry Potter Slytherin House crest image that was ~11×17″. I picked this design because both my husband and I have many of the positive traits of Slytherin (even though I also have just as many traits as a Ravenclaw). But there are so many different kinds of kits that you can choose from ranging from Disney to Christmas to even famous paintings like Van Gogh’s Starry Night. I think it could be fun working on a Santa Claus painting just prior to Christmas. Part of the battle will be picking what project you want to buy!

One thing that surprised me about the diamond painting was how long it took to complete the painting. I was thinking that it wouldn’t take long to complete, which made me worried that I was wasting my money on the kit. But I was pleasantly surprised because it entertained me for several days. It was also fairly easy to do and the jewels were easy to apply. Each color was labeled with a different symbol and the decoder was easy to use. This project was so relaxing. I have been having some rough days at work recently, so it was nice to work on the painting with a glass of wine to help me relax.

One downfall of this type of project was the size of the jewels. These jewels were very small, so if you have small children or pets they could accidentally eat the jewels. It also took up a good chunk of my dining room table, but since it is only my husband and me, it wasn’t a big deal. I would just keep in mind the space required since it is harder to just put it away after working on it (unlike knitting or crocheting).

Overall, I enjoyed my first diamond painting. It was so relaxing to work on and the end result looked amazing. I even purchased a second diamond painting that I will be working on in the future. I hope you check out diamond painting!
