Are you wanting to make a temperature crochet project, but are overwhelmed by the size and time commitment of a blanket? I made a temperature blanket in 2021 (it was a corner to corner blanket, you can find the pattern here) but didn’t want to make another huge blanket since it was a large time commitment and took up too much of my couch. So I was looking for a new idea that was a little bit more manageable. That is when I decided a jellyfish would be perfect.
A jellyfish is prefect because I could do a tentacle for each month. I used the first year of my son’s life to develop the pattern (birth to 1st birthday), but you can do January 1st to December 31st. I am located in Northeast Ohio so I used this temperature range for the colors. Feel free to modify the colors or temperature ranges to reflect your location or preferred color palette. I used the Loop & Thread Soft Classic Solid Yarn for my jellyfish.
| Temperature | Color |
| <28F | Purple |
| 28-37F | Light Blue |
| 38-47F | Teal |
| 48-57F | Mint Green |
| 58-67F | Yellow |
| 68-76F | Orange |
| 77-83F | Coral |
| >84F | Pink |
You can purchase a printer friendly copy of the pattern from Etsy.
Materials Needed:
- H/8 – 5 mm crochet hook (This is the one I used, I like the soft grip on the handle)
- ~130 yards of medium weight (4) yarn in 8 colors (acrylic or cotton is recommended) – I used the Loop & Thread Soft Classic Solid Yarn for my jellyfish.
- 1 yard of black yarn to sew on face.
- Poly-fill stuffing
Gauge/Size
Gauge is not critical for this pattern. Finished size may vary depending on yarn and tension.
Finished size: Approximately 9 inches tall including tentacles, depending on yarn, tension, and date range used.
Abbreviations
- Ch – chain
- Sc – single crochet
- Hdc – half double crochet
- Dc – double crochet
- Sc2t – single crochet decrease
Notes:
- Pattern is worked in continuous rounds (do not join unless stated).
- Use a stitch marker to track rounds.
- Color changes are made on the last yarn over of the previous stitch.
- Tentacles naturally curl due to stitch density.

Pattern
Tentacles (Make 12 total, one per month)
Each tentacle is worked in one row along a foundation chain. Each day uses 2 chains and 6 single crochet stitches, which creates the natural curl.
Months with 31 days:
Ch 63 in the color of Day 1.
3 sc in the 2nd ch from hook, 3 sc in next ch.
Change to the color of Day 2.
*3 sc in next ch, 3 sc in next ch, change color for next day.* Repeat until the end of the month.
Months with 30 days:
Ch 61 in the color of Day 1.
3 sc in the 2nd ch from hook, 3 sc in next ch.
Change to the color of Day 2.
*3 sc in next ch, 3 sc in next ch, change color for next day.* Repeat until the end of the month.
February:
Ch 57 (59 for leap year) in the color of Day 1.
3 sc in the 2nd ch from hook, 3 sc in next ch.
Change to the color of Day 2.
*3 sc in next ch, 3 sc in next ch, change color for next day.* Repeat until the end of the month.

Head
I used the same color as the birth of my son (aka day 1), but you can use whatever color you want. The head uses seamless rounds.
Rd 1: Make a magic circle (also known as a magic ring) with 8 sc. (8 sc)
Rd 2: 2 sc in each sc. (16 sc)
Rd 3: *2 sc in first sc then 1 sc in next sc.* Repeat ** (24 sc)
Rd 4: *2 sc in first sc then 1 sc in next 2 sc.* Repeat ** (32 sc)
Rd 5: *2 sc in first sc then 1 sc in next 3 sc.* Repeat ** (40 sc)
Rd 6: *2 sc in first sc then 1 sc in next 4 sc.* Repeat ** (48 sc)
Rd 7: *2 sc in first sc then 1 sc in next 5 sc.* Repeat ** (56 sc)
Rd 8: *2 sc in first sc then 1 sc in next 6 sc.* Repeat ** (64 sc).
Rds 9-16: sc in each sc (64 sc)
Rd 17: *sc2t then 1 sc in next 5 sc.* Repeat ** (56 sc)
Rd 18: *sc2t then 1 sc in next 4 sc.* Repeat ** (48 sc)
Rd 19: Working in back loop only, (hdc, dc, hdc) in each sc. (144 sts — creates decorative frill)
Rd 20: Working in the front loops of Round 18, attach tentacles evenly around the head with the right side facing outward. *Sc in next sc, sc through the top of a tentacle and next sc, sc through the same tentacle and next sc, sc in next sc.*
Repeat from * to * around to attach all 12 tentacles. (48 sc)
Rd 21: *sc2t then 1 sc in next 3 sc.* Repeat ** (40 sc)
Rd 22: *sc2t then 1 sc in next 2 sc.* Repeat ** (32 sc)
Rd 23: *sc2t then 1 sc in next sc.* Repeat ** (24 sc)
Stuff head
Rd 24: *sc2t* Repeat ** (12 sc)
Rd 25: *sc2t* Repeat ** (6 sc)
Fasten off.
Using black yarn, sew on face. Your new temperature buddy is complete.

I love this idea but, after reading some of the comments, I’m stumped…
This would be a terrific first birthday gift, and starting with the head color as the birthdate temperature makes sense. What I’m (probably) overthinking is how to work the tentacle for the birth (& 1st birthday) month. Most of us aren’t born on the 1st of any month… so… start in the middle? I don’t think that would work, and 2 “short” tentacles doesn’t seem to solve the problem either. Any ideas?
I did the 20th of month 1 to the 19th of month 2. So you would still have 28/30/31 depending on the month.
