When I was on maternity leave, I would occasionally go to Joann or Michaels and walk around when my husband was home just to get out of the house for a little bit. On one of these trips, there was a discount on yarn at Joann. Because of the discount, I decided to pick up a cake of Lion Brand Cover Story yarn. I have seen this yarn several times in the past and thought it might be a good yarn to try while I was on leave. So I bought the yarn and walked out of the story with my giant cake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have never seen Lion Brand Cover Story Yarn before, this is a giant cake of super bulky (weight 6) yarn. The cake is huge! When I bought it, the person checking me out had to use the largest bag to bag it. The cake weighs 1000 grams (35.2 ozs) and contains 547 yards of yarn. The reason the cake is so large is because there is enough yarn to make 1 throw blanket in the cake. This is a nice benefit as you do not have to match dye lots for a project. It comes in several different single-color and multi-color options. I purchased the color “Zephyr” for my blanket at Joann<\/a>. It was a multi-color cake that contained purple, green, blue, and pink.<\/p>\n\n\n

For my project, I used the Darla Blanket pattern from Joann. You can find the pattern here<\/a>. I liked this pattern because it looked simple enough for me to be able to pick up the project whenever my son was sleeping or playing with my husband. <\/p>\n\n\n

Here are some things that I liked about the yarn. Since the yarn is super bulky, the blanket works up very quickly (which I loved). It was also very soft. I like to work with chenille yarn because of its softness, but I know that chenille yarn isn’t for everyone. In my cake, I noticed there weren’t any knots or places that looked like two yarns were tied together. The colors were also very vibrant and fun. The Zephry option that I purchased kinda reminded me of some of my toys from the 90s because of the colors. I also liked the fact that I could make the entire blanket using just one cake of yarn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now for the negatives about the yarn. Because the yarn is a giant cake, it can be difficult if you center-pull and have to move the cake and project around. I ended up having to move my project\/cake off the couch one day because we were having visitors and it ended up in a tangled mess. This is more of a me problem and not the yarn’s problem, but it was very frustrating trying to untangle the yarn for the last quarter of the blanket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
